History
Located on the western end of the Southern Outer Banks Island (Bogue Banks) in between Virginia and South Carolina, Emerald Isle is part of a collection of seaport towns that make up the Crystal Coast Region of North Carolina. Unlike most family beach resort areas, Emerald Isle has maintained its’ stand in protecting the area from overgrowth and over commercialization. Many vacationers are largely return visitors who comment that the area is a quiet, clean, and affordable beach. In the off-season, Emerald Isle has a modest year-round residential population of 3,720 as opposed to its peak tourist season population of 16,000.
Historically, many sources say that the area was originally occupied by nomadic Native Americans and whalers who came here to settle in 1893. The area was largely uninhabited until it was purchased by a group of developers in the 1950’s. A hired consultant flying over the island to survey the area noticed the lush, green forests contrasting against the sparkling, blue ocean and made the statement that it should be called Emerald Isle.
